Building silicon-based quantum computers with mobile spins

Silicon spin qubits are having a moment. In July 2026, two papers co-published in Nature demonstrated the first error-correction primitives in this platform, and momentum is growing across academia and industry to produce bigger and more capable quantum processors. However, state-of-the-art progress is advancing down surprisingly distinct paths, ranging from dense arrays of exchange-coupled spins comparable to superconducting systems to sparse arrays of mobile spins in the spirit of trapped-ion or neutral-atom systems. In this seminar, I will provide an overview of the current state-of-play in the field before diving further into the implementation of the mobile-spin approach and the physics of spin shuttling in semiconductors. Along the way, I will highlight the ways in which moving spins on-chip changes how we think about qubit control, readout, and system design.
