Arranged into densely packed assemblies, noble metal nanoparticles display
distinct optical properties that make these materials promising building
blocks for mesoscopic waveguides, metamaterials or plasmonic sensors. This
talk deals primarily with the bottom-up fabrication of regular 1D, 2D, and 3D
assemblies of gold nanoparticles over macroscale areas by chemical and
topographic structuring. Moreover, optical effects arising from the interplay
of the near-field coupling and diffraction in periodic supercrystal arrays are
discussed.
