Porous thin films prepared by Physical Vapor Deposition at oblique angles
present a series of outstanding characteristics that make them unique
candidates for the synthesis of nanostructural materials and the development
of advanced devices. [1] Last advances of the synthesis of this kind of thin
films and related nanosculptured structures, either by e-beam evaporation or
magnetron sputtering, will be revised paying attention to the physical
mechanisms that control their growth and give rise to their high porosity,
nanocolumnar microstructure and in-plane asymmetry. Their use as template for
the synthesis of composite photonic materials, as optofluidic sensors or as
electrodes for fuel and photovoltaic cells are examples of possible
applications of this type of nanostructure materials that will be revised in
this talk.
