Nobel metal nanoparticles have become versatile building blocks for bulk and
thin-film materials with tailored optical functionality. In the rational
design of functional nanomaterials, the close correlation of structural and
optical properties plays a key role. Ranging from the single particle level up
to hierarchical multi-particle architectures, I will present different
colloidal approaches for designed plasmonic assemblies \- both at interfaces
and in solution.
