Defects are known to affect, and sometimes dominate, the properties of
materials. In this talk I show mechanisms of defect stabilisation in
ferroelectric materials that could be used for improving the reliability of
existing devices; I discuss the role of defects in the stability of two-
dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at oxide interfaces, and show how the unusual
electronic properties of interfaces may be a direct consequence of defects
formation.
