nanoGUNE Colloquium: Let’s TWIST again Topological Whirls In SpinTronics ** ** **Let’s TWIST again** **Topological Whirls In SpinTronics** Karin Everschor-Sitte (JGU Mainz) Skyrmions are topologically stable whirls that are realized in different areas of physics and were initially discovered by Tony Skyrme in particle physics in the 1960's. Here we will focus on skyrmions that occur in magnetic systems and which experimentally have been observed for the first time in 2009. Within a decade, the field of magnetic skyrmions has become a very active research area, exploiting the topological properties of the magnetic whirl-like particles for spintronics and, more recently, unconventional computing schemes. For example, the peculiar twist of the magnetization in skyrmions leads to a very efficient coupling to electric currents and allows for “banana kicks” in analogy to the ones in soccer. **Host:** J.
