ONLINE - PhD Mid-term Seminar Series: Tuning the coupling strength between hexagonal boron nitride phonons and photonic modes in infrared microcavities **** **Tuning the coupling strength between hexagonal boron nitride phonons and photonic modes in infrared microcavities** Maria Barra Nanodevices Group, CIC nanoGUNE Strong coupling between molecular vibrations and microcavity modes has been recently demonstrated to modify physical and chemical properties of the molecular material. Here, we study experimentally and theoretically the much less explored coupling between lattice vibrations (phonons) and microcavity modes. Embedding thin layers of the polar van der Waals crystal hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) into classical microcavities (formed by two planar mirrors), we demonstrate the evolution from weak to ultra-strong phonon-photon coupling when the hBN thickness is increased from a few nanometers to a fully filled the cavity. Remarkably, strong coupling is achieved for hBN layers as thin as 10 nm, corresponding to 1/140 of the photon wavelength. On the other hand, the ultra-strong coupling observed in fully filled cavities yields a cavity polariton dispersion matching that of phonon polaritons in bulk hBN, pointing out that the maximum light-matter coupling in a classical microcavities is limited to the coupling strength between photons and bulk materials. The tunable cavity phonon polaritons could become a versatile platform for studying how the coupling strength between photons and phonons may modify physical and chemical properties of polar crystals. \---------- PhD Mid-term Seminar Series: Maria Barra & Andrei Bylinkin Mon, Oct 5, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM (CEST) ** **Please join my meeting from your computer, tablet or smartphone. ** ** [ ](https://www.gotomeet.me/CICnanoGUNE/phd-mid-term-seminar- series-maría-barra--andrei-by ) ** **You can also dial in using your phone.** ** United States: +1 (872) 240-3311 ** **Access Code:** 879-535-661 ** New to GoToMeeting?
