PhD Mid-term Seminar Series: Tuning the magnetic properties of 2D layered MPS3 compounds through molecular intercalation

**Tuning the magnetic properties of 2D layered MPS3 compounds through molecular intercalation** Daniel Tezze Pre-doctoral Researcher, Nanodevices, CIC nanoGUNE Intercalation of 2D layered materials is a powerful fabrication and processing tool to modify their optical, electronic and magnetic properties. In this project, we explored two main intercalation strategies (electrochemical and solution-based intercalation) to synthesize hybrid organic-MPS3 2D superlattices with tuned magnetic properties. In particular, NiPS3 and MnPS3 host materials were successfully intercalated with guest alkylammonium or metallocenium ions. Upon intercalation, the antiferromagnetism of the pristine compounds is suppressed. Instead, TBA0.25NiPS3 and [Co(Cp)2]0.25NiPS3 display ferrimagnetism below 78 K and 98 K and a hysteretic behavior with non-zero remanence and coercivity. Moreover, four different alkylammonium-intercalated MnPS3 compounds (GxMn1-x/2PS3 with G = TMA, TEA, TBA, CTA) show different magnetic properties, depending on the specific molecular guest specie. Our results indicate that molecular intercalation is a promising route to tailor the magnetic properties of layered materials.
