Electronic reconstructions in hybrid C/BN heterostructures The realization of hybrid C/BN monoatomic sheets [1] with potential half- metallic properties [2], opens the possibility to achieve multifunctional properties in a graphene-like structure, where electro-magneto-mechanical properties can be tuned externally by application of an external perturbation (electric or magnetic fields, mechanical strains, etc). First principles calculations are used to show how the dielectric properties of BN ribbons and the spin-dependent interface states at zigzag-edged graphene give rise to unconventional physical effects similar to those observed at insulating oxide interfaces [3]. The effects of point defects, external electric fields, and strains on the electronic structure will also be discussed. [1] Ci et. al. Nat. Materials 2010, 9, 430. [2] J.M. Pruneda, Phys. Rev.
