Electrochemical capacitors: electrode materials, mechanisms, and current R&D challenges Trends in energy consumption and production are changing toward a more sustainable model, which requires the development of improved energy storage systems. Among those systems electrochemical capacitors or supercapacitors have found their niche at an intermediate position between batteries and dielectric capacitors. Stability for over 1 million charge/discharge cycles, ability for rapid charge, low-temperature and maintenance-free operation, and inherently high safety are the unique advantages making electrochemical capacitors the best energy storage solution in many specific cases. This lecture gives an overview of supercapacitors, their operating principles, and major performance-determining factors. Electrode materials will be considered with an emphasis on microporous carbons as the most viable solution. The relation between the properties of materials at nanoscale and their impact on electrode/electrolyte interfaces will be detailed. The corresponding optimization of the electrochemical response of supercapacitor electrodes will be exemplified with the work developed in CIC EnergiGUNE. **Host** : A.M. Bittner
