Polaritonic Fourier crystals for nanophotonics and meta- polaritonics

This seminar will showcase a new concept of polaritonic Fourier crystal where a harmonic modulation of the polariton momentum in a van der Waals material is deterministically possible by benefitting from a wafer-scale metallic Fourier surface employed as a substrate. This approach practically eliminates polariton scattering due to the smoothly varying rather than binary geometry. Thus, Fourier crystals boast a greatly suppressed intermode scattering of hyperbolic phonon-polaritons, allowing a quasi-single-mode operation regime despite the inherently multimode nature of hyperbolic phonon-polaritons in van der Waals slabs. Furthermore, the wafer-scale Fourier surfaces are free from the constraints of nanofabrication methods typical for nanophotonics, providing a feasible platform for polaritonic metadevices for far- and near-field applications. Experimental studies of the Fourier crystals for phonon-polaritons in h-BN and α-MoO3 will be discussed, with special focus on near-field imaging.
