Novel phenomena at high pressure Study of matter at extreme conditions often challenges preconceptions about chemical bonding - preconceptions formed through studies at ambient conditions. Recent developments of powerful crystal structure prediction methodologies have enabled systematic discovery of new materials and new types of chemical bonding under high pressure. I will discuss partially ionic form of pure elemental boron, transparent insulating form of sodium, and superconducting phases of hydrides with unique bonding.
