Excitation and ionization of atoms by twisted light Optical vortex beams, often referred to as twisted light, have attracted much interest during the past 20 years. In particular, the spin and orbital angular momentum distributions of such vortex beams have been explored theoretically in detail. Much less is known however about their interaction with (clouds of) atoms and molecules, and how the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of the incident light affects the photo-electron emission or the subsequent fluorescence. In this contribution, I shall review and discuss recent results on the excitation and ionization of atoms by twisted light. Emphasis will be placed especially on the interaction of localized atomic targets with (Bessel) beams of different intensity, and including the formation of sidebands, generation high-harmonics and asymmetries in photo-electron momentum distributions.
