Spin-orbit phenomena in materials and quantum mechanics Spin-orbit interaction (SOI) plays an important role in many physical phenomena. In a general sense it can be said that it allows for a mixing of wave functions and adds a dynamical component to the system. By presenting our spin- and angle-resolved photoemission results I will show how SOI combined with other interactions and symmetry breaking leads to fascinating new electronic and spin properties of materials, which are in turn tuneable by external parameters. Furthermore, it will be explained how the measurement of the electron spin can yield fundamental insight in the time scale of quantum mechanical processes and can be used to detect electron entanglement.
