Synthesizing topological phases in atomic and electronic quantum matter Topological phases provide us with robust quantum states and feature exotic phenomena like quantum statistics beyond the Bose/Fermi paradigm. In my seminar, I will present strategies for the engineering of topological phases in synthetic quantum systems like cold atoms, as well as for the manipulation of topological phases in electronic matter via quantum-optical tools. I will show that these methods provide not only novel opportunities for the genuinely difficult detection of Abelian and non-Abelian anyons, but can also be used to flexibly create phases of interest. These may include the non-Abelian Fibonacci phase, an interesting candidate for topological quantum computing, or a fractional Wigner crystal phase which combines signatures of symmetry- broken order and topological order.
