In the first part of my talk, I will introduce and explain the main features
of the quantum metric, which is a gauge-invariant geometric tensor that arises
from the band structure of lattice models. I will show that it plays an
important role in superconducting and topological systems in two dimensions
and in the semiclassical dynamics of wave-packets. Importantly, this quantity
has been recently measured in several synthetic-matter experiments. In the
second part of the talk, I will present my original contributions to the
field, by discussing the role of the quantum metric in three-dimensional
Hermitian topological semimetals and in gapped pseudo-Hermitian phases.
The latter are non-Hermitian models that are characterised by real energy
spectra and can describe suitable quantum dissipative systems.
