Adiabatic quantum computation allows solving hard optimization problems,
adiabatically driving the ground state of a quantum spin system starting from
a simple, and easy to prepare, ground state, towards the one of a complex
interacting Hamiltonian, encoding the solution of the problem at hand.
Adiabaticity requires long-time dynamics that are not allowed in real life
devices, affected by decoherence and dissipation. In this talk I will
summarize our recent achievements to speed up quantum annealing with two
different strategies. On the one hand, we can implement nonlinear annealing
schedules, including pausing and reverse annealing, that may improve the
performance of quantum annealing in the presence of a dissipative bath. On the
other hand, we can also pursue shortcuts to adiabaticity, based on the
suppression of diabatic transitions. Most of our results are obtained for the
fully-connected ferromagnetic p-spin model, an analytically solvable model
with a search-like behavior.
