CANCELLED - Chitosan based systems for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide composed of two structural units distributed along the macromolecular chain in a random manner, N-aceyl-D- glucosamine and Dglucosamine bound together by b(1-4) glycoside links. Commercial chitosan is generally obtained by the extensive deacetylation of chitin (namely, poly(N-acetyl-Dglucosamine), natural polysaccharide extracted from crustacean shells. Chitosan is soluble in dilute aqueous solutions of many organic and inorganic acids, producing highly viscous solutions. It forms chelates with transition and posttransition metal ions, is amenable to chemical modification due to its –OH and -NH2 groups, and can be processed into gels, films, fibers, microspheres and nanoparticles. Chitosan is biocompatible, biodegradable and non-toxic. It is mucoadhesive, haemostatic, hipocolesterolemic, hipolipidemic, and possesses antiviral and antimicrobial activity. These remarkable biological properties, together with the above mentioned physical and chemical properties make it an attractive polymer for applications in medicine and pharmacy. The aim of this talk is to present some results obtained on the preparation of different chitosan based systems with potential application in drug delivery and tissue engineering, such as: pH sensitive hydrogels obtained from the polymerization of acrylic monomers in the presence of chitosan, microparticles generated by simple coacervation, nanoparticles prepared by complex coacervation, nanoparticles obtained by self-assembling of soluble chitosan derivatives grafted with lipophilic drugs, and chitosan/apatite composites for bone repair.
