**Amos Martinez** received his degree in physics from the University of Bath,
followed by a MSc in optoelectronics and lasers from St. Andrews University
and a PhD in photonics from Aston University (UK). After his PhD, he divided
his time between academia and industry. In the University of Tokyo, he studied
the mode-locking of fibre lasers using carbon nanotubes and 2D materials. Back
in the UK, after a period as an editor in _Nature Communications_ , he joined
Toshiba Research Europe Labs (Cambridge, UK) where he focused on the
commercialization of quantum key distribution technologies. Prior to joining
_Nature Materials_ in June 2021, he was at the University of Cambridge
working towards the commercialization of fibre lasers for coherent Raman
microscopy. At _Nature Materials_ , Amos handles manuscripts in the areas of
photonics, plasmonics and metamaterials. Amos is based in the London office.
**Rachel Won** joined Nature Photonics in June 2006 from Aston University's
Business Partnership Unit in Birmingham, UK where she worked as a Medici
Fellow commercializing photonics research. She obtained her PhD in optical
fibre sensing, microwave photonics and fibre nonlinearities as a member of
Aston's Photonics Research Group. Prior to that, Rachel worked for Philips
Optical Storage in Singapore as an Optics Engineer. She holds a Master's
degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and a Bachelor's
degree from the National University of Malaysia. Rachel is based in London.
