Spin-flip absorption rate in surfaces with strong spin-orbit interaction Title: Spin-flip absorption rate in surfaces with strong spin-orbit interaction. Abstract: Understanding the dynamics --and the possible control-- of the spin degree of freedom by means of a time dependent electric field, is a problem of paramount importance. In this talk, we present an ab-initio analysis of the spin-flip transitions induced by external time-dependent electric fields considering the full spinor structure and maximally localized Wannier functions. Interestingly, our results demonstrate that a substantial part of the irradiated light is attenuated due to spin-flip processes, even though the considered surfaces are nominally non-magnetic.
