In recent years, new tools are emerging, capable to analyze strongly correlated many body quantum systems in those regimes where available techniques are in trouble. These new tools are 1) numerical simulations based on tensor network techniques, 2) quantum simulators based either on ultra-cold atoms, trapped ions or photons. I will review my contributions to both fields with emphasis on the flexibility of the tools that allow to study very diverse physical applications.
