Exploring matter under extremes conditions at the Linac Coherent Light Source The Matter at Extreme Conditions (MEC) end-station at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory provides a unique system capable of performing research on high pressure, warm dense matter (WDM) and high energy density (HED) physics. exploring matter at extreme conditions is very interesting for a large range of research fields including material and planetary science, atomic physics or fusion energy among others. MEC covers solid or near solid densities with pressures in the tens GPa – a few of TPa range and temperatures between 1,000 K ~ 1,000,000 K, where the particles are strongly correlated and coupled with complex atomic processes, making them difficult to be studied theoretically. At MEC, we have built an experimental instrument capable of in situ measurement of different matter properties before hydrodynamic disassembly by performing unprecedented pump-probe experiments involving the hard-X-ray free electron laser (LCLS) source and high power lasers. In this talk, I will give an overview of the latest experiments we performed at MEC, and its future capabilities.
