In the last 100 years or so, no less than ten Nobel laureates in physics have
produced works that have impacted on the improvement of the accuracy of
clocks. In this seminar of generaI interest I will first review the physical
principles at the basis of _microwave atomic clocks_ (Cs, H, Rb clocks) such
as used in the GPS, Galileo and communications. In the second part, I will
explain the practical realization with pulsed lasers of Einstein's "gedanken"
experiment of a _light clock_ , with the consequence that an _optical atomic
clock_ may soon replace the Cesium clock as a new primary frequency standard
of yet improved precision.
