From nanoscale systems to neuromorphic computing: a quick overview of S&T at IBM Research-Zurich Developing electronics beyond Moore`s law requires revolutionary vision in novel devices, disruptive technologies, new materials and alternative computer architectures. IBM has a long tradition in transforming fundamental research and discoveries into products, ranging from atomic manipulation, nanoscale devices up to large scale computing. For example, the integration of III-V compound semiconductors and SiGe in today`s Si CMOS technology is the next disruption after the advent of high-k metal gates. But more important is the change in IT paradigm with the recent advances in cognitive computing with neuromorphic devices mimicking the brain and quantum computing relying on quantum mechanical effects. I shall present some of the recent developments within the Science & Technology department in a company which is moving fast towards big data analytics and cloud based solutions.
