Numerical simulations have played a crucial role in our understanding of modern
cosmology. In this talk, I will review the historical development, main results, and
the fundamental assumptions of cosmological simulations. I will focus on the internal
structure of collapsed dark matter structures and report on recent results regarding
the formation and evolution of the very first structures in the early universe. Then,
I will discuss attempts to model and study dark matter in the continuum limit. I will
show how this leads to improvement in our understanding of dark matter dynamics
in the Universe, and how simulations will be central to answering some of
the most important open questions in cosmology.
