Synthesis of the multi-dimensional nano-carbon materials and the reaction mechanisms

In this report, the speaker will introduce the precise synthesis of diamond nanothread and carbon nano-ribbon via high-pressure topochemical polymerization of organic molecules. By carefully controlling the distribution of inert atoms in the aromatic rings and the intermolecular interactions, poly-triazine diamond nanothread and poly- furan-dicarboxylic-acid nanothread were obtained with atom-scale ordering. Besides the aromatic rings, alkynyl is also an active group in the pressure-induced polymerization. Via dehydro-Diels-Alder reaction of phenyl- alkynyl diphenylbutadiyne and its analogues polymerize to form sp3-C(H) and N substituted armchair graphitic nanoribbons with atom-scale ordering. Most of the pressure-induced polymerization of these organic molecules follows topochemical rules, and starts to bond when the nearest intermolecular C···C distance reach ~3.0 A. By calculating the thermal displacement of the atoms of acetylene under high pressure, the translational and librational vibrations are found to be the most important contributors to initiate the reaction.
