The JCNS Deuteration Service
Deuteration labelling is a very powerful tool for neutron scattering techniques, especially on soft matter. The ability to utilize selective contrast variation to highlight specific areas within a material or mixture is one of the main benefits of neutron scattering over the corresponding x-ray techniques. Over the last few years, we have built up a deuteration service for users of the MLZ and other neutron facilities at the JCNS. This talk aims to present our deuteration activities by first giving a general introduction into how deuterated materials are synthesized, followed by highlighting some of the projects where the CFM has collaborated with the JCNS deuteration service. These projects span a variety of different materials including thermoresponsive polymers (NIPAM), ionic liquids, methacrylates, ethylene glycol oligomers and methylammonium iodide for perovskite synthesis.
