To celebrate European Geoparks Week 2026, the Basque Coast Geopark has organized an extensive program of activities from May 22 to 31 in Deba, Mutriku, and Zumaia, with the science behind surfing taking center stage. One of the main activities will be the “Surf and Science” exhibition, organized by the Chair of Scientific Culture at the University of the Basque Country (EHU), DIPC, and Donostia Kultura. Through three large-scale infographics in Basque and Spanish, the exhibition explains, among other topics, the technology behind surfboards, the science of ocean waves, and the practice of this water sport. The exhibition will be open from May 22 to 31 on the esplanade next to the Mutriku swimming pools and in the Moilaberri area of Zumaia.
The opening of the “Surf and Science” exhibition will take place on Friday, May 22, at 6:00 p.m. on the esplanade next to the Mutriku swimming pools. The event will be attended by the mayor of Mutriku, Ainhize Azpiazu; the director of the Geopark, Leire Barriuso; and the director of the Chair of Scientific Culture at the University of the Basque Country (EHU), Iker Badiola, among other officials.
In addition, from May 26 to 31, the Oxford Hall at Alondegia Kultur Etxea in Zumaia will also host the “Surf and Science” exhibition. The exhibition, which features the infographics from the traveling exhibition, will open to the public on Tuesday, May 26, at 6:00 p.m. Following the opening, there will be a talk on the influence of weather on waves, led by Joseba Egaña, head of forecasting at Euskalmet, the Basque Meteorological Agency. The exhibition will be open until May 31 during Alondegia Kultur Etxea’s regular hours.
