DIPC began its activities in 2000. It was conceived based on the idea that an advanced society needs advanced scientific research.

DIPC is singular in its institutional structure. It is a Foundation funded and governed by both public institutions (Basque Government, University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, and San Sebastian City Council) and private companies (Kutxa Fundazioa, Fundación EDP, Telefónica and CAF). DIPC pioneered the opening of independent research centers in the Basque Country, keeping nevertheless close and enriching interaction with the public University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).

In 2008, DIPC was selected as a ‘Basque Excellence Research Center (BERC)’ by the Basque Government’s Department of Education, and in 2019, DIPC was recognized as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

DIPC is also singular in the way it operates. It is a dynamic organization that operates under flexible management rules. Our philosophy is to promote an austere, simple and agile operation, far removed from bureaucratic rigidities, based on intellectual rigor, creativity and freedom.

With more than 200 researchers and a strong program of visiting scientists, the center acts as a catalyst for knowledge in its close scientific ecosystem. It produces more than 400 scientific publications annually and it currently holds several active ERC grants.

In these few years, DIPC has attracted top international scientists, establishing itself as a world-leading research institution.
