Juan Manuel García Ruiz, research professor at DIPC, will participate in the 36th edition of the Urrelur Mineralogy and Palaeontology Week to be held in Urretxu from 28 October to 3 November, with the documentary "El misterio de los cristales gigantes".
The presentation and screening of the documentary and subsequent colloquium with Javier Trueba (director) and Juan Manuel García Ruiz (scriptwriter) is scheduled for Wednesday, 30 October.
"It is a fascinating adventure of scientific research. A journey into the depths of the Earth in search of the most beautiful treasures of the mineral world to explain one of its great mysteries: the formation of the gypsum giants. An exciting journey led by Professor Juan Manuel García Ruiz, who will reveal the wonderful world of crystals, their science and their beauty, and unveil the mystery of their formation".
"La mina de dinosaurios" will also be screened. "This award-winning 15-minute short film, directed by Javier Trueba, takes viewers into the open-cast lignite mine Santa María (Ariño-Teruel). An exploitation in which more than 7000 fossils have been found, some of them corresponding to unknown dinosaur species".
About the speaker
Juan Manuel García Ruiz is Ikerbasque Professor at Donostia International Physics Center and ad honorem Research Professor at CSIC. He studies crystallisation phenomena in very diverse fields, from the formation of giant crystals to self-organisation phenomena in biological and geological structures, with implications in the origin of life, the detection of primitive life, and the fabrication of new materials. He leads the European ERC-Synergy project "Protos". He is a cultural agitator committed to the promotion of a citizen culture based on science and an explorer of the frontier between science and art
