The Faculty of Chemistry of the University of the Basque Country (EHU) is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a varied programme of activities throughout the year. The ‘Donostia is Science’ conference, one of the highlights, is being held this week with the participation of 150 researchers working in the field of chemistry and related disciplines in our territory.

The EHU Faculty of Chemistry has organised this large-scale meeting in collaboration with DIPC, the Materials Physics Center (CFM), POLYMAT, CIC nanoGUNE, CIC biomaGUNE, CIDETEC, and Biogipuzkoa.

At the opening ceremony of the congress, Jon Mattin Matxain, dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and associate of DIPC, highlighted the scientific research carried out at the heart of the institution, which holds 8 Euskadi Awards, European projects won by two Nobel Prize winners, a Prince of Asturias Award, as well as the work of young people of great projection and four important research centres born from this faculty: the Materials Physics Centre, CIDETEC, DIPC and POLYMAT.

Over three days, from 28 to 30 May, experts dedicated to organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, polymers, as well as scientists close to the field of knowledge: biologists, doctors, physicists, materials scientists, engineers... have debated and shared their knowledge in the field of chemical synthesis, biomedicine, materials and renewable energies, polymers and their applications, biomaterials, batteries, among other topics of interest and current affairs.

The main objective of this scientific event is to establish new collaborations and existing links between the Faculty of Chemistry of the UPV/EHU and other research centres in the territory; to promote the urban scientific ecosystem; to disseminate the research advances of young researchers trained in Donostia; and to attract successful scientists from different areas of chemistry and other branches of science.

The closing ceremony of the conference will take place today, Friday 30 May, at 15.30, in the lecture hall of the Faculty of Education, Philosophy and Anthropology (HEFA I) of the UPV/EHU, by the Nobel Prize winner in Physics Albert Fert, Distinguished Professor of the Faculty of Chemistry.
