The Jot Down Science Contest celebrates its twelfth edition in 2025 under the theme “Critical Elements: From Tungsten to Rare Earths”, sponsored by Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC), the Laboratorium Museum of Bergara, and with the collaboration of the University of Seville, Jot Down, Revista Mercurio, and Menéame.

Organized by Jot Down magazine and the Laboratorium Museoa of Bergara, the contest invites participants to reflect on the materials that underpin modern technology—from historical tungsten to key elements for the energy transition such as neodymium and lanthanum.

Inspired by the enlightenment spirit of the Royal Patriotic Seminary of Bergara—where in 1783 the Elhuyar brothers isolated tungsten for the first time —the competition seeks to recognise works that combine scientific rigor with artistic expression. Submissions are open until July 31st in four categories: popular science article, short story, illustration, and photography.

DIPC joins once again this year this initiative that promotes dialogue between science, art, and society, reaffirming its commitment to public engagement and critical thinking. The winning works will be published in Jot Down, Mercurio Magazine, and Menéame, and will be presented at the Laboratorium Museoa, the epicentre of parallel activities during this edition.
