A new edition of the DIPC Summer Internship Programme concludes with a record number of applications
The DIPC Summer Internship Programme, aimed at undergraduate and master’s students, concluded in August with 334 applications for the 25 positions offered. One in three applications came from universities outside Spain
The summer internship programme at Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) continues to grow and consolidate as a gateway to the world of research for students from around the world. In 2026 alone, the programme received 334 applications—the highest number recorded since these data began to be collected—for a total of 25 positions offered.
Established in 2016, the programme has continued to grow year after year, reaching a total of 1,690 applications received and 155 students who have had the opportunity to undertake a research stay at DIPC.
The programme is aimed at undergraduate and master’s students and offers them the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the world of research and the working environment of a leading scientific centre. The positions are paid and can take place during the summer or throughout the academic year. Each year, projects are offered in areas such as nanoscience, physics, chemistry, and computational science, under the supervision of researchers from DIPC and the Supercomputing Center.
The 2026 edition also stands out for its international reach. Of the 334 applications received, 229 (69%) came from universities across Spain, while 75 (22%) were submitted by students from universities in other European Union countries and 30 (9%) from universities outside the EU.
Although the number of positions remains relatively stable—around 25 students per year—the increase in applications reflects the growing interest in the training and early-career research opportunities offered by DIPC.
