New Donostia, Zientzia Hiria series on quantum technologies

2024 Apr 12

Quantum technologies have the potential not only to revolutionize science, education and industry, but also to transform many aspects of society in the near future. They are governed by the laws of quantum physics, but what do we really know about these technologies and the impact they are going to have on our daily lives?

New Donostia, Zientzia Hiria series on quantum technologies

The answer to these and other questions will be tackled by the "Quantum Technologies" series, organized by Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) and the San Telmo Museoa in the framework of a new series of the Donostia, Zientzia Hiria program, scheduled to take place in April at the San Telmo Museoa, as part of its Challenges line.

The talks will feature top-level speakers in various areas relating to quantum technologies, such as the physicist Javier Aizpurua, Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC); he has just taken over the management of the Basque Quantum - BasQ strategy led by the Basque Government's Department of Education, with the involvement of the three chartered provincial councils. The BasQ strategy aims to position the Basque Country as a leader in the development of quantum technologies in the fields of research and talent, thus turning it into an international benchmark in these technologies. In his talk, scheduled for Friday, April 19, Aizpurua will be explaining the basic concepts underlying quantum technologies in simple, accessible language.

The round table on Friday, April 26 will feature the physicist Celia Rogero, Director of the CFM (CSIC-UPV/EHU) and expert in quantum materials; the physicist Kepa Ruiz-Mirazo, researcher at the Biofisika Institute and professor of Philosophy of Science and Biology at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU); the computer engineer Aitor Moreno, expert in artificial intelligence and quantum computing; and Cristina Sanz, Head of IBM’s Quantum Innovation Centers and expert in quantum technologies. The round table will be chaired by the physicist Javier Aizpurua, who will be encouraging dialogue on the revolution that quantum technologies will bring about in various aspects of our society.

Both sessions, on the 19th in Basque with simultaneous interpretation and on the 26th in Spanish, will be held at the San Telmo Museoa at 19:00 hours with free admission until full capacity is reached. They can also be followed via streaming on the San Telmo Museoa’s YouTube channel.
