Surf and Science will be the focus of Donostia, Zientzia Hiria cycle

Topics and places typically from San Sebastian will be examined under the magnifying glass of science in the frame of Donostia, Zientzia Hiria, a new project of Donostia Kultura supported by the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) and the Chair of Scientific Culture of UPV/EHU.

The first edition starts with the connections between surf and science as the central theme.

The official presentation of Donostia, Zientzia Hiria was held on Friday January 14, at 11:00 hours, in Okendo Kultur Etxea with the following representatives of the organizing institutions:

  • Jon Insausti Maisterrena, Delegate Councilor for Culture and Basque
  • Ricardo Díez Muiño, Director of Donostia International Physics Center
  • Juan Ignacio Pérez, Director of the Chair of Scientific Culture of UPV/EHU
  • Maia Garcia Vergniory, Researcher at Donostia International Physics Center
  • Amaia Almirall, Director of Okendo Kultur Etxea

With the name of Surfa eta Zientzia, the first round of conferences starts at Okendo Kultur Etxea with surfing as the central focus, due to its strong roots in the city and its surroundings, and because it involves various and interesting processes that can be examined under the light of scientific disciplines.

Surfa eta Zientzia will take place between January and April, with a series of monthly conferences in which renowned figures of science and surfing will address the subject from different perspectives, such as physics, meteorology, health, sports or the engineering. These conferences will be mainly in Basque, free of charge and aimed at all audiences, so you only need curiosity to enjoy them.

In addition, five totems with attractive infographics, made by NorArte Studio in collaboration with Euskampus, will rotate through different parts of the city and will explain the science behind the waves and the technology that moves surfboards.

The program will end in April with a practical activity aimed at young people to be carried out on Zurriola beach, depending on the current sanitary and meteorological conditions at the time.

Finally, all Surfa eta Zientzia conferences can be followed via streaming through the EiTB Kosmos channel dedicated to stream outreach, knowledge and communication events.

Donostia, Zientzia Hiria aims at becoming an annual highlight that summons neighbors and visitors, to enjoy the science behind city icons and to discover the top science carried out in San Sebastian.

This new initiative by Donostia Kultura adds to the collaboration between Ernest Lluch Kultur Etxea with the DIPC, under the name of New Paths of Science, which addresses the latest scientific advances in various fields, and the one recently started with Elhuyar, Emakume zientzialarien argitan, to give more visibility to the contribution of women in science. Donostia, Zientzia Hiria reinforces the city`s commitment to the dissemination of science and its protagonists.
