For over a decade, Kutxa Fundazioa and DIPC have been jointly organizing public science talks on current scientific topics of social interest, featuring leading scientists. On this occasion, they have organized the roundtable discussion Greenland in Focus: Climate Change, Resources and Geopolitics in the Arctic (Groenlandia hizpide: klima-aldaketa, baliabideak eta geopolitika Artikoan).

Greenland is undergoing a profound transformation. These changes are reshaping the territory and, at the same time, increasing its importance both in the Arctic and on the international stage. The effects of climate change, growing interest in its natural resources, and the new geopolitical context have made Greenland a key territory for understanding the dynamics transforming the Arctic.

This roundtable offers three complementary perspectives on Greenland: geopolitics, climate change and natural resources. Three speakers — Mikel Reparaz, Elisa Sainz de Murieta and Jorge Gorosarri — will draw on their respective areas of expertise to examine the main processes transforming Greenland, as well as the challenges, opportunities and tensions these changes will bring for its future and for the Arctic as a whole.

Language: Basque

Admission: Free, subject to venue capacity.

Elisa Sainz de Murieta is a lecturer in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of the Basque Country (EHU) and an associate researcher at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3). Her research focuses on the analysis of climate change risks and the evaluation of adaptation policies, particularly the economic assessment of their impacts, ranging from sea-level rise in coastal areas to the effects of extreme heat on human health. She holds a degree in Geological Sciences from EHU (2001). Before completing her PhD at EHU, she served as Director of Biodiversity and Environmental Participation for the Basque Government. She subsequently worked as a visiting researcher at the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics (LSE, 2017–2019). Jorge Gorosarri is a geologist, teacher and science communicator specializing in Earth sciences. A geology graduate of EHU, he worked in applied geology, geomorphology and hydrogeology during the early years of his career. For more than two decades, he has studied and explored the karst landscapes and underground environments of the Basque Country, particularly in Álava. He is currently president of the Zarama Speleological Group and a member of the Basque Union of Speleologists. He has worked as an expedition guide and naturalist, particularly in Greenland, where he has witnessed the recent transformations taking place across Arctic regions. He currently teaches natural sciences within the Basque Government's secondary education system and continues his work in the exploration, communication and conservation of the Basque Country's karst and underground heritage.
