Kutxa Fundazioa and DIPC
Kutxa Fundazioa and Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) jointly program talks on current scientific topics of social and cultural interest with the collaboration of prestigious scientists and great communicators. The talks, held in Spanish and Basque, are free and open to all citizens.
In 2026, we will address a highly topical subject: the total solar eclipse that will cross the Iberian Peninsula on August 12. This rare natural phenomenon was last observed in our region in 1905. Interestingly, solar eclipses have been closely linked to major scientific discoveries throughout history, particularly in the field of physics. In this series "Eclipses and Discoveries: In the Sun's Shadow", DIPC astrophysicists Silvia Bonoli and Mikel Falxa will explore some of the most surprising findings, on a journey that will take us from our own planet to the farthest known worlds in our galaxy.
In 2025, we celebrated the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology declared by the UN with the talks “Kuantikaz blai! - ¡Empápate de Cuántica!”. The first talk, “Aldatu txipa, murgildu kuantikan!", was delivered by Aran Garcia-Lekue, Ikerbasque professor at DIPC and expert in nanoelectronics. The second talk, “Manotazos en una habitación oscura. La llegada de la computación cuántica”, was delivered by Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón, mathematician at Univesidad de La Rioja and renowed science popularizer.
From 2019 to 2023 the lectures were organzied in the frame of ZientziKutxa conference cycle. In the different editions, scientists, such as the physicist Petra Rudolf, the astrobiologist Carlos Briones or the marine archaeologist Maria Intxaustegi participated, covering a whole series of topics ranging from more fundamental issues such as quantum physics or the origin of life, to scientific fields more related to exploration and field work such as volcanology, astronomical education in Africa or polar expeditions. The lectures are available on our youtube channel.
Past editions:
Zientziakutxa 2023. Red hot
Red in its most intense and evocative forms acquires a notable presence in this cycle in which volcanoes, climate change, the figure of the vampire and neuroscience were discussed.
Zientziakutxa 2021. Traveller gen
At a time of restrictions caused by the pandemic, Zientziakutxa vindicated scientist´s traveler gene beyond physical and mental borders.
Zientziakutxa 2020. Contemporary science at your fingertip
In 2020 the films Automata, The Tree of Life and Awakenings screened in the Cinema and Science series served to discuss robotics, the origin of life and the brain, among other topics.
Zientziakutxa 2019
Gravitational waves or the first photograph of a black hole were two astronomical milestones addressed in the first edition of the series, together with other topics such as AI or quantum technologies.
