The documentary ‘The Secret of Nature’, produced by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the EHU and directed by José Antonio Pérez Ledo, will be screened on Thursday, 15 October, at 11:00 at Kultur Elkartea in Deba. Admission is free until capacity is reached.
The film explores the life and career of Pedro Miguel Etxenike, Emeritus Professor of Condensed Matter Physics at the EHU and President of DIPC. The documentary presents Etxenike’s reflections on science, exploring what it is, what it involves and why it is so important, in an intimate and accessible tone. The documentary has a running time of 55 minutes.
Iker Badiola, Director of the Chair of Scientific Culture of the EHU, will introduce the documentary. The screening will be followed by an interview and discussion between Pedro Miguel Etxenike and Paco Salegi, a member of ARBIL.
The event is organised by ARBIL Elkarte Soziala of Deba, the Chair of Scientific Culture of the EHU and the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), in collaboration with the Basque Government Department of Science, Universities and Innovation.
About the speaker

Pedro Miguel Etxenike is Professor Emeritus of condensed matter physics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and President of the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) ) and the Materials Physics Center (MPC). Honorary President of Jakiunde, the Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters of the Basque Country, honorary member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and of the Académie Royale de Belgique, and honorary member of the European Physical Society.
He has received numerous awards and distinctions. The Euskadi Research Award (1996), the Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research (1998), the Max Planck Physics Award (1998), the Blas Cabrera National Research Award (2005), or the Gold Medal of the City of San Sebastian (2000) and of Navarre (2016), stand out among others. He is also Doctor in Science by the University of Cambridge (1998), and Doctor Honoris Causa by six other universities.
In addition to his research work, with more than 400 articles published in specialized journals and more than 200 invited talks at international conferences and prestigious universities and institutions around the world, in recent years he has devoted a great effort to promote science as an economic and cultural activity, and to highlight the importance of a scientifically informed society
