How to apply

We are currently accepting applications for the above mentioned position. This is a unique opportunity for junior researchers with a recent PhD degree in Physics or related fields to join one of DIPC’s high-profile research teams.

The role

We offer a postdoctoral position in the 2DSPM group led by Dr. Miguel M. Ugeda at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC, San Sebastián, Spain) to carry out cutting-edge research in the field of superconductivity in novel 2D materials. The long-term goal of this project is to leverage knowledge of the fundamental Cooper pairing mechanisms in unconventional 2D superconductors as well as to unveil their link to related collective excitations. This project will also pursue the creation and control of exotic electronic phases by 2D materials engineering by combining microfabrication methods and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).

The position will provide the candidate thorough scientific training in an excellent research environment. The candidate must have good knowledge in MBE for the growth of 2D materials. Expertise in experimental techniques for the structural, electronic and magnetic characterization of 2D superconductors and complex heterostructures is desirable.

The training will also focus on acquiring key skills towards an independent career, such as attaining original, independent and critical thinking, learn how to give successful oral presentations and learn how to write scientific papers. This position will allow the candidate to grow in prominence and stature in the Materials Science community, which will be valuable for his/her future in both the academia and industry.

Desired background & competences

  • Applicants must have a PhD degree in physics/chemistry.
  • Oral and written competency in the English language is essential.
  • The candidate must be enthusiastic and highly motivated.
  • Expertise in MBE.

Working conditions

  • Estimated annual gross salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and consistent with our pay scales
  • Target start date: 2024/06/01

We provide a highly stimulating research environment, and unique professional career development opportunities.

We offer and promote a diverse and inclusive environment and welcomes applicants regardless of age, disability, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity.

The center

DIPC is a research center whose mission is to perform and catalyze cutting-edge research in physics and related disciplines, as well as to convey scientific culture to society. Located in Donostia / San Sebastian (Basque Country, Spain), DIPC was born from a strategic alliance of both public institutions and private companies. Since 2008 DIPC is a 'Basque Excellence Research Center' (BERC) recognized by the Basque Government's Department of Education. In 2019, DIPC was also recognized as a "Severo Ochoa" Excellence Center by the Spanish Research Agency.

About the team

2DSPM group, an experimental condensed matter physics group belonging to the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC). Our research efforts are focused on the investigation of unusual collective electronic phenomena arising in novel low dimensional materials. In our laboratory, we grow these materials via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and investigate their properties using a variety of techniques including scanning probe microscopy (STM and AFM) and electron transport measurements, XPS, ARPES, and Raman spectroscopy.

How to apply

Interested candidates should submit an updated CV and a brief statement of interest to the following application email below.

Reference letters are welcome but not indispensable.

The reference of the specific opening to which the candidate is applying should be stated in the subject line, and the application must be received before the application deadline.

Although candidates are welcome to contact the project supervisors to know further details about the proposed research activity, please be aware that the application will be evaluated only if it is submitted directly to the email address listed below as application email.

Selection process

Applications received by the deadline will be evaluated by a Committee designed by the DIPC board on the basis of the following criteria:

  • CV of the candidate (40%)
  • Adequacy of the candidate’s scientific background to the project (40%)
  • Reference letters (10%)
  • Other: Diversity in gender, race, nationality, etc. (10%)

Evaluation results will be communicated to the candidates soon after. Positions will only be filled if qualified candidates are found.

The DIPC may revoke its decision if the candidate fails to join by the appointed time, in which case the position will be awarded to the candidate with the next highest score, provided it is above 50 (out of 100).

However, the selected candidate may keep the position if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, the candidate duly justifies the reasons why he or she cannot join before the specified deadline, and as long as the project allows it.

This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2022 research and innovation programme, with acronym mKoire and Grant Agreement number 101087014
