The meeting will begin with a talk on the history of quantum science presented by Rainer Blatt, after which he will be joined by Jaione Camborda to reflect on the creative processes in art and science.
The event will be held in English and Spanish, with simultaneous translation into Basque, Spanish and English.
Admission is free until full capacity is reached.
18:00 100 Years of Quantum Physics – And that's just the Beginning
100 years ago, quantum physics revolutionised our understanding of the world at a fundamental level. What was once considered a bizarre theory is now the basis for technologies that shape our everyday lives. In this talk, we will take you on an exciting journey through the history and into the future of quantum physics. We will explain how it was possible to penetrate the world of atoms and unravel their mysterious properties. How these discoveries have led to groundbreaking developments such as the transistor, the laser and GPS.
But this is just the beginning: in the 21st century, we are witnessing the next quantum revolution. We take a look at the exciting advances in quantum technology and show how quantum computers could change the world. From developing new materials to solving complex problems, the possibilities seem endless.
19:00h Conversation between a filmmaker Jaione Camborda and a physicist Rainer Blatt
The desire to know drives disparate processes and ways of proceeding within human activity. In this conversation between a physicist and a filmmaker we will have the opportunity to delve into the similarities and differences that occur between a scientific experiment and a film experiment. Jaione Camborda has produced a new piece for the exhibition “Quantum Visions” and for this she has collaborated with Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) and has done a residency at the Swiss center CERN, where the largest and most complex scientific instruments in the world are located to study the basic constituents of matter: the fundamental particles.
About the speaker
Rainer Blatt studied physics and received his PhD at the University of Mainz. As postdoctoral fellow, he worked on laser cooling of atomic beams with John L. Hall (Nobelpreis 2005) in Boulder (USA) and as a research assistant at the University of Hamburg with P. Toschek he worked with single trapped ions. In 1994, he became professor of physics at the University of Göttingen and in 1995, he accepted a chair position at the Institut f. Experimentalphysik of the University of Innsbruck, where he works with trapped ions in Paul-traps for quantum computers, quantum simulations and quantum metrology. Since 2003 he is research director at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) in Innsbruck. R. Blatt is co-founder of Alpine Quantum Technologies GmbH (AQT) in Innsbruck, a company developing commercial quantum computers. From 2021-2023, R. Blatt was the scientific manager and coordinator of the Munich Quantum Valley. For his quantum information research, he received the Schrödinger-Prize of the ÖAW in 2006, the Stern-Gerlach medal of the German Physical Society (DPG) in 2012, the John-Stewart-Bell prize of CQIQC (Toronto) in 2015 and the Micius Quantum Prize 2018. R. Blatt is a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the National Academy of Sciences of the USA and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
Jaione Camborda was trained at the Prague School of Film (FAMU) and the Munich School of Film (HFF), and began her career as a director with renowned short films such as “Proba de Axilidade” and “Rapa das Bestas”. Her first full-length feature film, “Arima”, was seen at the San Sebastian Film Festival and earned the Best Director Award in the New Waves section of the Seville European Film Festival and Best Film in the Márgenes festival’s Escáner section. She has also been selected to participate in different laboratories and residencies such as the TIFF Filmmaker Lab at the Toronto International Film Festival, in ECAM’s La Incubadora – The Screen development programme, Ikusmira Berriak, organised by the San Sebastian Festival, Tabakalera-International Centre for Contemporary Culture and the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE), and has recently benefited from the TIFF Canada Goose grant. Her latest film “O Corno” (2023) took home the Golden Shell from the San Sebastian Film Festival.
