The seventh edition of the Cinema and Science Cycle, organized by the DIPC, the Basque Film Archive and the San Sebastian Film Festival, will be held in 2024. Within the program, as every year, we will celebrate the International Day of Girls and Women in Science in collaboration with the Emakumeak Zientzian initiative.
In this year's session we will screen the documentary The Hedy Lamarr Story - (Alexandra Dean, 2017) which tells the life of the brilliant actress of classic Hollywood and Austrian inventor. During World War II Lamar patented a secret communication system. Inspired by the mechanism of a pianolet, it was first used in the Cuban Missile Crisis, and is considered one of the precursors of wifi.
Psinopis: Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr fled an oppressive marriage to create a name for herself as one of Hollywood’s top leading ladies in the 1940s. Behind the glamour and sex appeal, though, was a talented and inquisitive inventor who created a radio system that is now considered the basis of Bluetooth technology.
First Mari Luz Guenaga will give a presentation and after the screening there will be a question and answer session.

About the speaker
Mari Luz Guenaga, PhD in Computer Engineering, is professor and researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Deusto. She teaches subjects related to programming, human-computer interaction and data visualization. She is a member of the Deustek research team, recognized by the Basque Government, and responsible for the Deusto LearningLab. She has led and participated in national and international projects focused on STEAM education, open schooling, learning analytics, inquiry-based and game-based learning. She carries out transfer activities to the educational community in which hundreds of students, teachers and educational centers participate annually. She is responsible for Inspira STEAM, which aims to promote the interest of young people in science and technology, especially among girls. In eight editions, the program has reached almost 40,000 schoolchildren in more than 800 educational centers in Spain, Chile and Argentina, thanks to the volunteering of more than 2,400 science and technology professionals.
