The figure of Robert Oppenheimer continues to be the subject of general interest. Mainly known for his historic role as scientific leader of the Manhattan Project and creator of the atomic bomb, he possessed a complex and fascinating personality. Throughout his life he morally questioned the consequences of his work, opposing the use of nuclear weapons. At a time of great discoveries for atomic physics, against the backdrop of the tragedy of war, how does an awkward overachiever evolve into a sophisticated and charismatic intellectual leader? In the talk we will see what were the personal, intellectual, ethical and political dilemmas that marked his life.

During World War II, US Government appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. He and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history.

About the speaker
Pedro Miguel Etxenike is Professor Emeritus of condensed matter physics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and President of the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) and the Materials Physics Center (MPC). Honorary President of Jakiunde, the Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters of the Basque Country, honorary member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and of the Académie Royale de Belgique, and honorary member of the European Physical Society.
He has received numerous awards and distinctions. The Euskadi Research Award (1996), the Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research (1998), the Max Planck Physics Award (1998), the Blas Cabrera National Research Award (2005), or the Gold Medal of the City of San Sebastian (2000) and of Navarre (2016), stand out among others. He is also Doctor in Science by the University of Cambridge (1998), and Doctor Honoris Causa by six other universities.
In addition to his research work, with more than 400 articles published in specialized journals and more than 200 invited talks at international conferences and prestigious universities and institutions around the world, in recent years he has devoted a great effort to promote science as an economic and cultural activity, and to highlight the importance of a scientifically informed society.
