The life of a Hungarian physician through his struggles against the leading pragmatic, conservative quacks’ party while he becomes the first pioneer of the antiseptic procedures, saving many women’s life with his groundbreaking method.

First Joxean Fernández  will give a brief presentation and after the screening there will be a question and answer session.

About the speaker

Joxean Fernández is the Director of the Basque Film Archive since December 2010 and member of the Management Committee of the San Sebastian Film Festival since January 2011. He is an associate professor (on leave of absence) at the University of Nantes, specialist in Contemporary History and Film History. He got his PhD from the University of Zaragoza and the University of Nantes with a co-supervised doctoral thesis entitled Cinema and Civil War in the Basque Country (1936-2006). Since 2001, he has been member of the management committee of the Festival du Cinéma espagnol de Nantes and the driving force behind the "Ventana Vasca" section. He co-directed the documentary A las puertas de París (2008) with Marta Horno. He has authored numerous articles on the contemporary history of the Basque Country and cinema, he has coordinated the following books: Federico Fellini y Luis Buñuel (both with Jesús Angulo), Cine y Guerra Civil en el País Vasco (with Santiago de Pablo), Conservación audiovisual en la era digital (with Alfonso del Amo), De Lumière a Kaurismäki, La clase obrera en el cine (with Carlos F. Heredero). He is also the editor of Cine vasco: tres generaciones de cineastas and the author of the book Euskal Zinema-Cine Vasco-Basque Cinema. He was a guest professor at the Bernardo Atxaga Chair at the City University of New York (CUNY) in 2012 and 2017. He has contributed to the establishment of the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and is part of its Academic Direction.
