Have you ever wondered how surfers manage to glide over the waves? Do you know how waves are formed? Surfing is a sport behind which, as this exhibition shows, there is a lot of science.
The Surf and Science exhibition explains the relationship between this sport and science through a series of infographics, audiovisual material, a tank that generates waves and a selection of different boards and suits used for surfing. A whole series of elements to understand how waves are generated, how boards glide over them and what are the laws of physics that influence the practice of this sport.
The Surf and Science exhibition was created in 2021 by the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), the Donostia City Council and the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU. After touring different coastal towns, it arrives in Bilbao thanks to the collaboration with Euskampus Fundazioa, the Bilbao School of Engineering and the Peña Txuri Surf Eskola school in Sopela.
The exhibition can now be visited from 6 November to 12 December at Bizkaia Aretoa-UPV/EHU as part of the Zientzia Astea programme thanks to the support of the UPV/EHU's Directorate for the Social Dissemination of Research. The exhibition will also include guided tours offered by UPV/EHU Physics students who surf.
The guided tours will take place on 7 (Thursday) and 8 November (Friday) from 17:00 to 19:30 and on 9 November (Saturday) from 12:00 to 13:00. It is not necessary to register and it is sufficient to come to the Bizkaia Aretoa-UPV/EHU during these hours.
