STROM's tactile planets arrive at the exhibition “Mitoak orbitan. El Universo a la vista” in Bilbao
The new temporary exhibition at the Museum of Artistic Reproductions in Bilbao, which will remain open until 24 May 2026, is a bridge between mythology, art, science and inclusion
The Bilbao Museum of Artistic Reproductions has inaugurated the exhibition “Mitoak orbitan. El Universo a la vista” (Myths in Orbit: The Universe in View), which will remain open from 24 October 2025 to 24 May 2026. The exhibition invites visitors to explore the links between classical mythology and astronomical observation through Renaissance pieces and tactile resources that allow them to reflect on how cultures of the past interpreted the cosmos.
Curated by Itziar Martija and produced by the museum itself, the exhibition brings together Renaissance works representing Greco-Roman deities associated with the four elements of nature and the celestial bodies of the Solar System visible in Antiquity, a Renaissance print from the Cerralbo Museum in Madrid, and the horse's head from the Parthenon's Moon Chariot, a symbol of the connection between mythology and the representation of the firmament. The exhibition is completed with a module from the DIPC's ‘STROM Inclusive Astronomy’ exhibition, which allows visitors to touch the planets of the Solar System and compare their sizes.
'Mitoak orbitan. El Universo a la vista' is part of the museum's temporary exhibition policy, which seeks to revalue its own collections, enrich their interpretation and promote collaboration between institutions. On this occasion, the Basque Government, the Cerralbo Museum and the Donostia International Physics Centre (DIPC) have actively participated, strengthening the interdisciplinary dimension of the exhibition.
