As part of the "New Paths in Science" programme, Silvia Bonoli, a researcher at DIPC, will give a talk on solar eclipses.

On 12 August, from certain locations across the Iberian Peninsula, we will be able to witness a total solar eclipse, one of the most astonishing spectacles nature has to offer. The light, temperature and sounds of the surroundings change suddenly and, for a few minutes, we will be able to enjoy a unique experience for all the senses.

But total solar eclipses are not just a fascinating phenomenon: they have also been key to major scientific discoveries. In this talk, Silvia Bonoli will explore some of the most surprising findings made possible by eclipses, on a journey that will take us from our own planet to the most distant known worlds in our galaxy.

The talk will be in Spanish (translation service not available).

Free entrance until full capacity is reached.

This event forms part of the programme for the “JAKINALDI – Eklipsearen Jaia 2026” initiative, organised by the Basque Government.

Notice: The recording of the conference will be available as a podcast after a few days in Donostia Kultura Irratia.

Silvia Bonoli is an Italian astrophysicist who has been working as an Ikerbasque researcher at DIPC since 2018. Her scientific work focuses primarily on the study of supermassive black holes, from their formation to their influence on the galaxies that host them. After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Bologna and a Master’s degree in astrophysics at the University of Toronto, she obtained her PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Munich. She subsequently undertook postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Zurich and Stanford University. In 2013, she moved to Spain to join the Centre for Cosmic Physics Studies of Aragon as a researcher. In addition to her research work, she remains firmly committed to bringing science closer to society, participating in and promoting science outreach activities.
