Synopsis of the film:
According to a village’s ancient tradition, once a person turns seventy they must leave the village and go to live on the summit of Mount Narayama. A ruthless death sentence that plunges families into grief and despair as they send their elders away.

Aitzpea Leizaola is an anthropologist and professor at the University of the Basque Country, where she is also director of the official master’s degree program in anthropology. After the screening, there will be the usual discussion session during which attendees can ask questions.

About the speaker

Aitzpea Leizaola is an anthropologist and professor at the University of the Basque Country, where she is also director of the official master’s degree program in anthropology. A specialist in identity-building processes,her main areas of interest focus on border research, memory in post-conflict contexts, and Basque culture in general. She has been a Basque Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford and held the Amale Artetxe Chair at the University of Buenos Aires. She is engaged in outreach.
