In this project we will work with theoretical methods relevant for describing the physics of nanoscale devices, for instance the electronic and phononic properties of atomic-scale wires, single-molecule junctions, or graphene-based nanostructures.

Depending on the interest of the student, we will (i) study quantum transport theories (e.g., Landauer-Büttiker formalism, wave-packet propagation, and nonequilibrium Green's functions), (ii) develop toy models using tight-binding and interatomic potentials, and/or (iii) perform detailed simulations using ab-initio methods based on density functional theory (DFT).
