We are currently accepting applications for the above-mentioned position. This opportunity is intended for highly motivated researchers interested in experimental quantum optics and photonic technologies. The work will be carried out in the Quantum Nanophotonics Laboratory (MPC/DIPC).

The role

In this position, you will lead the development of a robust entangled-photon source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in nonlinear crystals. This includes defining system specifications, designing and selecting optical, electronic, and optomechanical components, and assembling a fully functional laboratory prototype. You will be responsible for optical alignment, integration of control and detection electronics, stabilization of the source, and implementation of measurement protocols to ensure high performance and reliability.

A central part of the role involves carrying out detailed proof-of-concept experiments to evaluate generation efficiency, spectral and temporal properties, interference visibility, entanglement quality, and long-term stability. You will identify and mitigate noise sources, optimize the design, and establish clear performance benchmarks. You will work closely with the research team of the Quantum Nanophotonics Laboratory, contributing to experimental strategy, data analysis, and technological development. The position offers the opportunity to drive forward a key line of applied quantum photonics and to shape the evolution of next-generation entangled-photon systems.

Desired background & competences

The ideal candidate holds a PhD in Physics, Photonics, or a related field, with demonstrated experience in experimental quantum optics. Strong familiarity with SPDC-based entangled-photon sources, nonlinear optics, polarization control, and coincidence-counting techniques is highly desirable. Experience in the design, assembly, and stabilization of complex optical systems is a strong asset.

Additional desirable skills include programming for data acquisition and analysis (Python, MATLAB), experience with single-photon detectors and timing electronics, and the ability to troubleshoot and optimize sensitive optical experiments. The candidate should demonstrate autonomy, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment. Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential.

The center

About the team

The Quantum Nanophotonics Laboratory is led by Ikerbasque Research Professor Gabriel Molina-Terriza. We are a team of scientists studying the interactions of quantum light and matter at the nanoscale. We explore single photon states, entangled photons, and squeezed states of light interacting with nanostructures.

Selection process

Applications received by the deadline will be evaluated by a Committee designed by the DIPC board on the basis of the following criteria:

  • CV of the candidate (40%)
  • Adequacy of the candidate’s scientific background to the project (40%)
  • Reference letters (10%)
  • Other: Diversity in gender, race, nationality, etc. (10%)

Evaluation results will be communicated to the candidates soon after. Positions will only be filled if qualified candidates are found.

The DIPC may revoke its decision if the candidate fails to join by the appointed time, in which case the position will be awarded to the candidate with the next highest score, provided it is above 50 (out of 100).

However, the selected candidate may keep the position if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, the candidate duly justifies the reasons why he or she cannot join before the specified deadline, and as long as the project allows it.
