Research Assistant - Quantum Light–Matter Interactions on Photonic Crystals (Open)
aitzolgarcia@dipc.org
a.gonzalez.tudela@csic.es
We are currently accepting applications for the above mentioned position. This is a unique opportunity for highly motivated students recently graduated from the University in Physics or related fields to gain research experience in one of DIPC’s high-profile research teams.
The role
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to work on the theoretical development of topological photonic platforms for quantum technologies.
The research will focus on understanding and engineering the interaction between quantum emitters and topological photonic crystals, with the ultimate goal of developing robust light–matter interfaces for future quantum-photonic applications.
The research will include the development and application of tight-binding, electromagnetic and quantum-optical models to optimize the coupling of individual quantum emitters to structured photonic environments. The candidate will also investigate coherent interactions between spatially separated emitters mediated by topological edge, corner and hinge states, including the implementation of two-point Green’s-function methods for realistic photonic-crystal supercells.
The project combines fundamental theory with experimentally oriented design. The candidate will therefore help translate theoretical predictions into realistic photonic structures, define experimentally measurable observables and collaborate with theoretical and experimental partners in Spain and abroad. The work will involve analytical modelling, numerical simulations of Maxwell’s equations, photonic band-structure calculations and the development of computational tools for quantum light–matter interactions.
Candidates should hold, or be close to completing, a Master’s degree in Physics, Photonics, Quantum Science, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. A strong background in electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, photonics, condensed-matter theory or numerical physics will be highly valued. Previous experience with Maxwell solvers (MPB, Comsol, Lumerical, etc), photonic crystals, topological band theory, Green’s functions, tight-binding methods or scientific programming would be advantageous, but is not essential. We are looking for a creative and independent researcher with strong analytical and computational skills, an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and the motivation to contribute to the emerging interface between topological photonics and quantum technologies.
Desired background & competences
Candidates should have a background in Physics, Engineering or a closely related discipline, with solid knowledge of electromagnetism, quantum optics and related areas of photonics or condensed-matter physics. Strong analytical and numerical skills, together with an interest in theoretical and computational research, are highly desirable. Previous experience with numerical tools for solving Maxwell’s equations, such as MPB, COMSOL Multiphysics, Lumerical or Monte Carlo eXtreme, would be an advantage but is not mandatory. Experience in scientific programming, particularly in Python, MATLAB, C/C++ or similar languages, will also be valued. We are looking for a motivated, rigorous and collaborative candidate with the ability to work independently and contribute effectively to an interdisciplinary research environment.

About the team
The PhD student will carry out her/his doctoral research under the joint supervision of Aitzol García-Etxarri, at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), and Alejandro González-Tudela, at the Institute of Fundamental Physics of the Spanish National Research Council (IFF-CSIC). This co-supervision will provide the student with complementary expertise in nanophotonics, topological photonics, quantum optics and many-body quantum systems, as well as access to two active and internationally connected research environments. Aitzol García-Etxarri’s group is a diverse research team based at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) that investigates light–matter interactions at the nanoscale, combining fundamental physics with potential applications in biomedicine and quantum technologies. Its main research lines include topological photonics, chiral light–matter interactions, and nanoneuro. Within this multidisciplinary environment, the PhD student will work primarily in the group’s topological photonics line, contributing to the theoretical study and design of photonic structures for quantum-optical applications. Alejandro Gonzalez Tudela´s group works at the interface of quantum optics, condensed-matter physics, and quantum technologies. We develop and study novel hybrid quantum optical systems in which light, matter, and engineered many-body platforms interact in unconventional regimes. Our aim is to uncover phenomena that are inaccessible in standard quantum-optical settings and to translate these insights into new concepts for quantum simulation, sensing, information processing, and device architectures.
How to apply
Interested candidates should submit an updated CV and a brief statement of interest to the following application email below.
Reference letters are welcome but not indispensable.
The reference of the specific opening to which the candidate is applying should be stated in the subject line, and the application must be received before the application deadline.
Although candidates are welcome to contact the project supervisors to know further details about the proposed research activity, please be aware that the application will be evaluated only if it is submitted directly to the email address listed below as application email.
- Reference: 2026/40
- Application deadline: 2026/08/23
- Application email: jobs.research@dipc.org
Selection process
Applications received by the deadline will be evaluated by a Committee designed by the DIPC board on the basis of the following criteria:
- CV of the candidate (60%)
- Adequacy of the candidate’s scientific background to the project (20%)
- Reference letters (10%)
- Other: Diversity in gender, race, nationality, etc. (10%)
Evaluation results will be communicated to the candidates soon after. Positions will only be filled if qualified candidates are found.
The DIPC may revoke its decision if the candidate fails to join by the appointed time, in which case the position will be awarded to the candidate with the next highest score, provided it is above 50 (out of 100).
However, the selected candidate may keep the position if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, the candidate duly justifies the reasons why he or she cannot join before the specified deadline, and as long as the project allows it.
